Amazing Anoushka!!

I stumbled upon this piece of gem in Youtube. Anoushka Shankar on the Sitar. I know Anoushka as the daughter of Pandit Ravishankar and that she has come out with few fusion albums. But this is the first time I am hearing her. She is awesome on the Sitar. She looks divine too. She looked like a Goddess Saraswathi only playing the Sitar with such effortless ease. I will certainly hear more of her in the future and would love to visit a live concert of hers.

மார்கழியில் குளிச்சுப் பாரு..

“மார்கழியில் குளிச்சுப் பாரு..” is a song from Thangarbachhan’s new movie “ஓன்பது ரூபாய் நோட்டு”. Thangar has cinematized his novel of the same name here in this movie. It tracks the story of a farmer, Madhava Padaiyaachi, played with aplomb by Sathyaraj. I am yet to see the movie, but had the opporutunity to watch a couple of songs and watch some scenes on TV. It seems to be a good movie. I am especially happy for Sathyaraj who has rediscovered his versatality as a good actor and trying out different roles from Periyar to Madhava Padaiyaachi. My favorite on screen performance of Sathyaraj is that of ‘Balu thevar’ in ‘Vedham puthithu’. But Sathyaraj is not the subject of this blog. This blog is on one of the two songs in the movie that I had the opportunity to add. I liked the lyrics so much that I started searching for them on the net. As I could not find them, I have to do the honours.Here are the lyrics for you…

Doubly Divine!!

“Maitrim Bhajatha” is one of my most favorite songs. I go back to it and “Kurai ondrum illai” whenever I feel down. The graceful voice of M.S. is bound to move you and raise your spirits.

The song has got a very beautiful message – it is a call to renounce agression and embrace compassion. His Holiness the Paramacharya of Kanchi wrote this song specially for  M.S. to sing in the UN General Assembly.  I found the English translation of this song today in a book. Here is it,

“Cultivate friendship that conquers all hearts,

Look upon others as thyself,

Renounce war and unnecessary competition,

Give up aggression,

Mother Earth is ready to give us all we desire,

Our lord is compassionate to all,

Observe restraint and show kindness,

May the whole world be happy and prosperous.”
